Fatimah (SA); The Epitome of Sacrifice

Fatimah (SA); The Epitome of Sacrifice

Surah Al-Insan (also known as Hal Ata or Ad-Dahr) of the Noble Qur’an was revealed entirely in honor of the lofty status and greatness of Ahl al-Bayt (AS). This Surah specifically highlights their spirit of sacrifice and generosity. According to hadith and tafsir sources, once Hasan and Husayn (AS) fell ill. The Holy Prophet (PBUH), accompanied by some companions, came to visit them. He then said to Imam Ali (AS): “O Aba al-Hasan! It would be best to make a vow for the recovery of your two sons.”

Following this, Imam Ali (AS), Lady Fatimah (SA), and their maid Fiddah vowed that if the two children recovered, they would fast for three consecutive days.

Indeed, they observed the fasts, and Surah Hal Ata was revealed in honor of Ahl al-Bayt (AS), highlighting not only their exalted status but also emphasizing their remarkable generosity and selflessness during their fasts and at the time of iftar (breaking the fast). When the Surah was revealed, the Angel of Revelation (Jibreel) appeared and said: “O Muhammad! Almighty Allah sends you His congratulations because of this blessed household.” He then recited Surah Hal Ata to the Prophet (PBUH).

This Surah mentions several noble qualities of Ahl al-Bayt (AS). In particular, Allah highlights three outstanding virtues: fulfilling vows, self-sacrifice, and sincerity:

“They fulfill their vows and fear a Day whose evil will be widespread. They give food—out of love for Him—to the needy, the orphan, and the captive, saying: ‘We feed you only for the sake of Allah; we seek neither reward nor thanks from you.’” (Surah Al-Insan, verses 7–9)

In these verses that extol the sublime qualities of Ahl al-Bayt (AS), the unique status and role of Lady Fatimah al-Zahra (SA) clearly stand out—especially her sincerity, her selfless sacrifice and spending purely for the sake of Allah, and performing good deeds without seeking any reward or gratitude. This is a profound lesson in true success for us all.
